The largest Lutheran body in the United States with about five million members, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) was established with the merger of three bodies in 1987: the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA represents a wide array of Lutheranism, going from one coast to the other. As has traditionally been the case in Lutheranism, the ELCA primarily exists to train pastors, to establish new congregations, and help people otherwise grow in grace. To serve these purposes, the ELCA has eight seminaries 28 colleges and universities, campus ministries throughout the United States , missionaries throughout the world, Augsburg-Fortress publishing house, and other resources to aid in the work of congregational ministries.
